Yes it is formal. You should include enough information to determine if the total momentum was conserved; i.e. ( treating momentum as a vector) see if the total momentum of the two carts is the same before and after each collisions. You should determine the percent error. You should also check to see if KE was conserved, i.e. was total KE the same before and after.
